What do we want to achieve?

The general objectives of the research project are:
  • To experimentally create replicate forest communities with differing tree species diversity, from the pool of local species present at each site.
  • To examine and quantify the effects of altered species richness and functional diversity on key ecosystem structural characteristics and processes, including long-term C-sequestration.
  • To quantify the C-sequestration of mixed-species afforestations and to investigate the underlying processes.
  • To understand the underlying mechanisms of diversity - function relationships.
  • To study the effects of forest management on diversity - function relationships.
  • To assess the implications of diversity - function relationships for forest management, ensuring both economic and ecological sustainability.
  • To provide a research platform suitable for the investigation of a variety of scientific questions on biodiversity - function relationships.
  • To provide the data bases for a long-term observation programme on forest biodiversity and ecosystem processes.
