Within-plot design       Plots of the BIOTREE-FD approach have a size of 1,700 m2 with a hexagonal shape. Within each plot, species will be planted in rows with a plant-to-plant distance of 1 m and a row-to-row distance of 2 m. The different species will be arranged in circular groups of 20 individuals, covering an area of 38.5 m2 each, thus preventing early outcompetition of slow growing species by fast growing ones.   Each species will be represented by 11 groups per plot.
