Two distinct approaches       The experiment will be divided into two distinct approaches to manipulate diversity: At two sites ("Mehrstedt" and "Kaltenborn"), the diversity gradient will be established by manipulating the number of tree species (BIOTREE-SPECIES), whereas at one site ("Bechstedt") only functional diversity at a constant level of species richness will be varied (BIOTREE-FD).         Establishment of the diversity gradient     Species diversity   Functional diversity Number of species   Species traits   BIOTREE-SPECIES BIOTREE-FD
